Fans of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will eat up this young adult thriller. The first title in the translation of Salla Simukka’s Snow White Trilogy, As Red as Blood is a chilling tale that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats.
Lumikki Andersson keeps to herself and stays out of other people’s business. The last time she meddled in someone else’s problems, she had to deal with a major fall out. Lumikki would rather live in an empty apartment and not talk to her fellow students than go through that again. But when she accidentally stumbles onto thousands of washed euro notes hanging to dry in her school’s darkroom—and three of her classmates at the center of it—she knows she is going back in the fray.
From being chased by anonymous figures to racing against the clock to figure out a murder mystery, Lumikki has to use all of her wits to figure out exactly what’s going on. If not, she’ll pay the ultimate price.
Ann Marie Lee is a wonderful narrator for this series. Her voice is straight forward and sensible, traits that perfectly emulate Lumikki, but also captivating throughout all the twists and turns of the storyline. Listeners will fully believe the aloof nature of Lumikki, but when the times comes for Lumikki to be a bit softer, Lee delivers on that as well.
As Red as Blood is a pulse pounding, fun listen. It’s refreshing to have such a no-nonsense main character. Touches of Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are apparent with Lumikki, but she’s enough of her own character to make you root for her. Filled with possibilities of what might occur next, As Red as Blood will keep listeners guessing exactly where the story will take Lumikki…and if she will survive her next encounters.
