What We Listen to with Our Kids

Need a suggestion for an audiobook to listen to with your child(ren)? We asked staff members what audiobooks their kids love listening to together. From really young to older listeners, there’s something for everyone:

“My favorite book to listen to with my two little boys is What Pet Should I Get? Rainn Wilson is the perfect narrator for this—and parents who are fans of The Office will appreciate his distinctive voice. When he gets to “FISH FISH FISH FISH,” everyone joins in as if it were a sing-along. We also often have discussions about which pet the brother and sister chose and which one we would choose if we were picking a pet. The answers are different every time! This title is truly a perfect example of how an audiobook can spur the imagination.” ‒Vicki Tomao, associate director, strategic marketing

“Stella and I are listening to On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder, narrated by Cherry Jones.” ‒Karen Dziekonski, producer

The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo, was the first audiobook my daughter and I listened to together. We were driving to a family party, and I popped in the cassette (yes!) thinking it would entertain her during the long car ride. To my great surprise, she and I were immediately swept up in the story of a tiny mouse whose courage is larger than life. Graeme Malcolm delivers DiCamillo’s beautifully written words in a rich and imaginative voice. The asides directed at the listener absolutely thrilled my daughter. She felt like he was speaking directly to her. We were both so enraptured with the listening experience that neither of us wanted to get out of the car when we reached our destination. Since then, we’ve read or listened to every other book by Kate DiCamillo.” ‒Heather Dalton, VP, marketing

“When taking long or short rides, my family and I love listening to Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat and Other Dr. Seuss Favorites. The kids already know many of the stories, but then to hear them read aloud provides a new experience for them. And to hear them read by familiar voices such as John Lithgow, Dustin Hoffman, or Billy Crystal makes it fun for the parents as well.”      ‒Dennis Tyrrell, associate director, online marketing and web production

“My kids and I truly love listening to the Harry Potter series, read masterfully by Jim Dale. We’ve listened to those audios over and over and over again. They never get old! We also love Books 1‒9 of the Geronimo Stilton series, read by Edward Herrmann; Gabriel Finley and the Raven’s Riddle by George Hagen, read by Michael Goldstrom; and Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee, read by Jayne Entwistle. Oh, and can’t forget Books 1‒3 of The Bunnicula Collection by James Howe, read by Victor Garber! Truly equal to our profound love for the Harry Potter series is our love of the Philip Pullman audios The Golden Compass (full cast), The Subtle Knife (full cast), and The Amber Spyglass (full cast). And as of recently (but only for older kids), The Book of Dust, read by Michael Sheen. And of course the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, read by Nathaniel Parker. And the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. And Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller, read by Jason Segel. And Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House series. There are just so many amazing audios out there!”    ‒Orli Moscowitz, producer
