Michelle Obama's Becoming wins Best Spoken Word Album GRAMMY award
Becoming by Michelle Obama wins Best Spoken Word Album GRAMMY Award®

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has earned a Best Spoken Word Album GRAMMY Award® for the audiobook recording of her memoir Becoming, published by Penguin Random House Audio.

The Recording Academy® announced the award on January 26th during the GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony® in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Obama says of her GRAMMY® win, “Thank you to the Recording Academy for this honor! I had plenty of doubts about sharing so much of myself in Becoming, but this moment is another reminder that when we own the truth of who we are, we give ourselves the chance to connect with others in real, meaningful ways.”

Since its publication on November 13, 2018, Becoming has sold more than 12 million units worldwide across print, digital, and audio formats, including more than 7.5 million units in the U.S. and Canada alone, and has been published in 46 languages. Michelle Obama’s bestselling audiobook of Becoming has been on the New York Times Audio Nonfiction Best Seller List for 14 straight months since its publication, including 7 months in the #1 slot.

This was the First Lady’s second GRAMMY nomination; her #1 bestselling book about the White House garden, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, was a Best Spoken Word album nominee in 2013.
