What Light – A Beautifully Memorable Christmas Tale

Jay Asher, known for his debut novel Thirteen Reasons Why, is back with his first solo title in almost a decade. What Light is a beautifully crafted Christmas tale that will have you remembering your first love just in time for the upcoming Christmas season.

Sierra’s family runs a Christmas tree farm in Oregon. Every year after Thanksgiving, the family packs up and travels to California to sell these trees on their family’s lot. Sierra essentially lives two lives—her regular life and her Christmastime life. While both places bring her joy, they rarely interact.

But this Christmas, Sierra meets Caleb, and she realizes that this might become a problem. Caleb isn’t your average guy. Everyone—from Sierra’s California best friend to the patrons of the diner Sierra visits—attempts to warn her away from Caleb. But there’s something about him that draws her to him.

Caleb made a terrible mistake years ago, and has been paying for it ever since. Small towns rarely forgive nor forget, but Sierra sees beyond Caleb’s past and makes it her mission to help him find forgiveness. But as disapproval comes from her family, friends, and the town, Sierra realizes what she feels for Caleb is much greater than what she anticipated—true love.

Mandy Siegfried is a wonderful choice to narrate Sierra’s story. Mandy brings a sweet type of innocence that comes about with true love, but when Sierra boldly stands up for Caleb, you can feel the harsh edge come out.

What Light is the perfect story to welcome the brisk weather and the approaching Christmas season.  Not everyone is as they first seem, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon them for rumors. Sometimes, it’s just best to follow your heart.
